Building Stronger Workplaces: Recognizing Employees

Jul 31, 2026 | Building Stronger Workplaces

Workplace culture plays an important role in attracting, engaging, and retaining employees. While competitive wages and benefits matter, people also want to work in environments where they feel valued, respected, and supported.

One simple way to strengthen workplace culture is through meaningful recognition.

Recognition doesn’t have to be formal or expensive. In fact, some of the most meaningful recognition can happen in everyday conversations. A sincere thank you, shared at the right moment and tied to a specific action, lets people know their contributions have been noticed.

Instead of saying, “Thanks for all you do,” try being specific:

  • “Thank you for the way you handled that customer.”
  • “Your attention to detail really helped this project succeed.”
  • “I appreciated the way you stepped in to help your coworker yesterday.”

Taking a few moments to recognize someone’s contribution reinforces the behaviors and values that help create a positive workplace culture.

Building a positive workplace culture often begins with small, consistent actions. Recognition is just one way to strengthen workplace culture. Encouraging open communication, supporting well-being, and creating opportunities for connection all contribute to a workplace where people feel appreciated and respected.

Throughout the Strong Workplaces series, we’ll continue sharing practical ideas organizations can use to build stronger workplace cultures, one small step at a time.
